OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

This seminar is focused on developing an understanding of the human arm from the inside out. While there may not be a one-size-fits-all formula for designing tattoos, understanding the anatomy of our canvas can have a transformative effect on the way we approach design, placement, and flow.

Artists will learn anatomy through observation and sketching -not simply memorization- to assist them in creating a foundation they can apply directly to their work. This seminar is designed for tattoo artists of all experience levels who want to expand their tool kit by deepening their understanding of the human body.

SECTION 1: Understanding the Parts

The session begins with guided anatomical drawing exercises designed to build a working understanding of the human arm and how it moves. We’ll spend this time unlocking the major forms, landmarks, and muscle groups that shape the arm, and how these elements interact and move.

(Estimated time: 45 min)

SECTION 2: Seeing the Whole

The second portion of our study will challenge participants to apply their new knowledge immediately via direct observation.

With an understanding of the arm’s anatomy established, we will transition to drawing from a live model in order to practice recognizing those same anatomical building blocks in a real human form. The goal of this exercise is to strengthen our ability to see structure rather than surface alone.

(Estimated time: 45 min)

SECTION 3: Anatomical mapping in practice + Q/A

I have seen an immediate improvement in my work since I started applying anatomical structure to my planning and design, and I’ll share some of the ways I apply the concepts covered in this seminar to my own work. I’ll demo the current way I like to map/measure my clients’ limbs, and answer any questions with the remaining time.

MATERIALS NEEDED

This is a DRAWING FOCUSED seminar- plan accordingly!

Class fee: The $10 covers the cost of hiring a live drawing model for the time. I’m not charging for my time as I’m still working out the kinks of this seminar and would love feedback afterwards.
